Program Overview

Rural Hinds County citizens pay as much as $10 to travel to Jackson to shop, run errands, or attend medical appointments. For individuals in the outermost reaches of the county, taxi fares can cost as much as $75. Through the Section 5311 Rural General Public Transportation Program, citizens living in rural areas of Hinds County are provided a safe, reliable, and accessible means of transportation so they can attend to their daily living needs. While emphasis is placed on serving elderly and disabled individuals, convenient and affordable transportation is available to all citizens living in rural Hinds County (Bolton, Byram, Clinton, Edwards, Raymond, Terry and Utica).

In accordance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Mississippi Department of Transportation assures that no persons on the basis of race, color, and national origin, including the denial of meaningful access for limited English proficient (LEP) persons shall be discriminated against under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.
